This is so incredibly relevant across beats in media. Been working as a journalist for large outlets for over 15 years—freelance and on staff. It never gets easier and the opportunities are fewer. Increasingly, magazines—those that still exist—will reduce staff by half, refocus on what earns immediate ad and affiliate dollars and cut the journalists following meaty stories (which contributed to their reputation in the first place) without a second look. Freelance can be freeing, but an absolute grind. Diversifying beats and homing the ability to work with a range of editors and marketers (sigh, yes it's true), will only buoy the chances to earn an income without burning out or despising the reasons why you wanted to enter this bloodbath in the first place. Great piece!
This was a great read and very insightful in terms of how the soup is made, so to speak. I appreciate the insight behind how other writers make shit work (read: pay the bills through writing.) Also, really digging Superviolet who you’ve just turned me onto. So, thanks for that.
