Love Slippers, was unaware of that backstory... Got another book rec for ya, Joy Williams' Breaking and Entering, 80s novel about a young couple breaking into Florida vacation homes. Fucked up beach read, laugh out loud funny, hypnotic, strange. Also one of the all time book covers imo.
The Slippers write-up is the one that got me—a band whose whole pitch is songs catchy enough for a kid to love, and then “Sunday Morning” is quietly about getting crushed “by the weight of things.” Bubblegum jangle wrapped around a lyric that's anything but. That gap between how a song sounds and what it's actually carrying is pretty much my entire wavelength, so you've sold me on that one before I've even hit play. Adding half this list to the queue. Great issue.
